I just read a new article at theServiceSide.com about RIA … they also refer directly to OpenLaszlo.

The Article is based on an article of Glen Lipka Blog. He gives a List and short description about the different Frameworks. Don’t know if its just a list or a ranking based on the opinition of the author. I think most of the devs/readers do not recognise yet that they can render in both runtimes, DHTML and SWF. But its good to see that the discussion about it has started.

The Release 0.5.2 is a development snapshot

Fixed Issues/new Features:

a Pointer Tool, also non Moderators can click on the Whiteboard and everybody will see that.
removed the annoying bandwidth warning in the Screen-Sharing Client
Screen Sharing Client does stop broadcasting screens to all users if the user leaves the room
new Toolbars
new translation (Hungarian)
new Property Inspector
some minor issues like removed browser feature, disabled recording button, changed window resizer
a new Servlet for Direct-Login/Invoking SOAP Methods without using SOAP see MethodGateway

this will be the last release of OpenMeetings based on OpenLaszlo 4.0.x.
For the next version we will switch at least to OpenLaszlo 4.1.1.

The Moodle Plugins (and all others usign the SOAP-Gateway should still work)
The recorder-buttons, browser-feature are disabled cause they need some rework. To enable the recorded you will have to build the client from source.

OpenLaszlo running in Chrome faster then in Firefox3?

as the first Application to test with the new Google Browser Chrome I choose the OpenLaszlo Demo Applications (LzPix, Calendar, Amazon, Component Sampler) in latest OpenLaszlo-Trunk. First of all I do not see any real difference from the Look And Feel. I had the feeling that Firefox 3 is slightly faster on my Windows machine. But it could be just my subjective feeling.

After all its very nice to see that Chrome seems to be fully compatible to OpenLaszlo generated JavaScript! An in depth comparison / benchmark of Chrome and Firefox3 (and also other browsers) to see which one is best for OpenLaszlo in DHTML runtime would be a great little project.

TheServerSide.com about best RIA Technology Combination

According to an author of TheServerSide.com the Integration of Flex/Java is much more successfull. They call OpenLaszlo *immature* when they did the Evaluation in their article.
Maybe they should try a Spring, Hibernate, Red5, OpenLaszlo Evaluation that would give them another point of view.

Converter Tool for OpenLaszlo for the new Class system

I just wrote a small tool to convert LZX-Files from 4.0.x (or even older ones) to the new Class system.

What it does do

I parses your hole project for ClassNames and writes the Names them to a File. This File is not yet used, just for controling.

The application holds the list of your Project-Classes in the Instance and replaces all

instanceof $YOURCLASSNAME
with
instanceof lz.$YOURCLASSNAME

new global
with
new lz

It does not scan for the Base-Classes, only drawview is handled, you can handle more classes or extend the system to first parse through the Laszlo Components (or just copy lps-dir to the input directory)

OpenMeetings Moodle Integration Modules

with OpenMeetings 0.5.1 the Integration of OpenMeetings into different environments is not that hard!

I made the first step by creating two Plugins for Moodle (wide spreaded ELearning Platform). For installation and how-to see:

The Moodle Plugin is only a first step into integration here. It is possible to directly add as many Rooms of Type Conference of Audience into any Course you like. It Plugin uses the new SOAP-Gateway to get/set some values in the OpenMeetings API (http://code.google.com/p/openmeetings/wiki/SoapMethods). But it only uses 50% of the Methods available here, so extending the Plugin with new functionality should be quite easy.

With this app you can:

You can test all Audio, Video and Streaming Settings used in OpenMeetings. You can test, specify optimize settings. Please think about that this Application uses a video of width 320 and height 240. If you change the width and height, also the Video-Settings might be different to get a superior result.
With this application you can also test how the NetStream/Streaming behaves if the Bandwidth is Bad. For example where and which Events are thrown.
You can test how the Microphone quality changes if you change the rate. (Echo et cetera)
You can change how the client behaves if you re-sync the NetStream (Stop/Resume Broadcasting)
You can check how the client behaves if you do a long-term test (For example after 1 hour Live BroadCasting)
